Social Media & Attention
Social Media is Making Us More Hungry For Attention
Social media is absolutely changing the way people consume content and it’s becoming more competitive. Competitive, in the sense, that more of the entertainment entities are instilling various strategies to appeal to people all while staying relevant. It seems simple, but it’s actually really competitive. With the incorporation of various outlets, such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, users can post whatever they feel the need to post (within guidelines). In the entertainment industry, social media may not seem that far off from this dynamic of content being seen and so forth. In the entertainment industry, something interesting I read was how Snapchat is utilizing their platform to push tv shows, I never would have thought a platform that is meant for quick snapshots would produce a full length show. But, with the changing world and how everything is on our phones, this seems like a smart move – especially for a younger audience that is not often watching tv shows as they air on broadcast tv.
PROS of Social Media in Entertainment Industry:
One of the greatest things to come out of social media is finding talent, which is wild. Someone can post a video singing and if the algorithm works in this person’s favor, it could essentially go ‘viral’ without even realizing. It brings more awareness to ‘regular’ people and how really anyone can be a “star”. Another pro of utilizing social media is definitely being able to interact and engage online with shows/movies and tell other people about them, which markets their content more, by use of consumers to promote freely.
People strive for attention more-so based on notification and rising follow count, rather than the actual content itself. Another con of social media would be it incites impatience. Attention and impatience are two of the greatest cons that have made people more hungry for content and overall notifications. In the entertainment world, the biggest thing is copy infringement and keeping content secure is quite difficult.
OWL DAYS: Life As A KSU Student
- Do you want to take part in showing what you do in a day?
- Are you a KSU Student?
- Do you have a phone to utilize Instagram?
If you answered YES to all of those questions, stay put.
A new, reality show will be taking place on Kennesaw State’s campus, strictly on social media. The overall concept is having students from different backgrounds, specialties, and athletics showcase their daily life on Instagram Live and will be able to view afterwards on IGTV (Instagram TV), if people missed the initial recording.
Individual episodes will range from 10-15 minutes, as it isn’t too long, but it also isn’t too short, to make sure people all have the opportunity to check it out and not be bored watching.
Episodes will start to flood Instagram starting on Mondays at 2:30 p.m., where KSU students can fill out a form, on the show’s official Instagram, @OwlDays, if they are interested to walk through their day at KSU during a full schedule of theirs where other KSU students can ask questions during the whole process, making it more interactive with one another.
Instagram is the best platform to distribute this program as it is relevant and it offers an opportunity to show KSU students in real-time, rather than the use of camera equipment, all they need is their phone, which most of the student body already owns themselves.
Instagram Live is seen as being the best for unedited content that actually allows people to engage more than just a fully edited video, the more human qualities shown, the better response it will receive.
This show will be promoted primarily through the students at KSU and word-of-mouth. As crazy as it sounds, once people see that their friends, peers, other people are taking part, it will grow exponentially with more and more people wanting to take us on a journey of their day as a KSU student. This program will be successful because students want to hear from other students, especially hearing about relatable struggles, classes, and everything in between for students by the students for a cooler, inside look of what makes them who they are at KSU.
